The Partners

Stephen A. Singh (FCIArb) was born in Kingston, Jamaica and is a graduate of the University of the West Indies (Upper Second Class Honours, 1985) and the Hugh Wooding Law School (1987). He is the Senior Partner of Johnson, Camacho & Singh. As a commercial litigator of approximately 30 years experience, he has appeared before most tribunals in the Caribbean including the CCJ and the Court of Appeal of the OECS. He is admitted to practice in Anguilla, Antigua and Barbuda, Grenada, Guyana, St. Lucia and Trinidad and Tobago. He has appeared as Counsel in major insolvency cases in the region namely: Allied Bank and Bank Crozier (In Liquidation) (Grenada); the Hyatt Hotel Receivership and Cotton Bay Liquidation (St. Lucia); BCCI (In Liquidation) (Trinidad and Tobago); the Mazaruni Granite Receivership (Guyana) and APUA v. Asot Michael et al (Antigua); Motor and General Insurance Company (In Liquidation) on behalf of the Central Bank and the World GTL Receivership as Counsel for Petroleum Company of Trinidad and Tobago Limited.

He is a fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitration and his main practice areas include Arbitration, Banking and Finance, Construction Law, Cross Border Insolvency, Environment Law Insurance, Labour Law, Oil and Gas, Maritime Law and Tax. In Trinidad and Tobago he has acted on behalf of the Inspector of Financial Institutions viz. insurance companies in liquidation and has commented on the new Insurance Act. Whilst representing other clients in regulatory matters, he has had to provide advice to the SEC, EMA, COTT and the Telecommunications Authority of Trinidad & Tobago. In conjunction with UK Counsel, he has participated in ICC Arbitrations such as Merhav Mekorot Development Trinidad & Tobago Limited v. WASA (2013) and Consolidated Energy Limited v. Colonial Life Insurance Company (Trinidad) Limited; CL Financial Limited and Methanol Holdings (Trinidad) Limited (2014) and currently serves as Arbitrator in a number of matters.

He has represented sponsors, architects, project managers and financiers, providing advice on various issues in large infrastructural projects throughout the Caribbean. Notable projects include the ALNG Project, Phase 1 where he represented Whessoe Overseas Limited, the subcontractor for the construction of the LNG tanks, the Transjamaica Highway Project (where as part of a team he advised financiers on various construction issues), the Government Campus Plaza (where he represented the Project Managers, Turner International Ltd.) and UTT’s Signature Campus Project. In 2011 he was Counsel for a team of negotiators for Construtora OAS S.A., a Brazilian EPC Contractor awarded the Point Fortin Highway Project in Trinidad. He has appeared before the UFF Commission of Enquiry into construction issues in Trinidad and Tobago on behalf of Turner International Ltd

In the area of medical negligence, he represented the MDU in his first two years of practice whilst employed at M. Hamel-Smith & Co., 1987-1989. He was part of a team which represented an oncology centre in a claim brought against it by a cancer patient who subsequently died. Recently he has advised on negligence arising from an open heart surgery procedure.

A former Chairman of AMCHAM’s Environmental Committee, he was involved in stakeholder meetings on the Environmental Bill and has advised energy sector clients on CEC Applications and Notices of Violation. In the area of energy, he has given advice specifically on various aspects of Gas Sales Contracts, Production Sharing Contracts and was Junior Counsel for the Board of Inland Revenue against a major oil company on an issue of the incidence of taxation of Natural Gas Liquids. As Counsel to Methanol Holdings (Trinidad) Limited, he has developed a working knowledge on taxation issues as it relates to downstream companies. He appears regularly before specialist tribunals such as the Environmental Commission, Tax Appeal Board and the Industrial Court.

A founding member of the Trinidad and Tobago Chamber of Commerce’s Dispute Resolution Center, Stephen is among other things a certified mediator, a former member of the Panel of Conciliators and Arbitrators for the International Convention for the Settlement of Investment Disputes, a past member of the Caribbean Law Institute’s Advisory Committee on Alternative Dispute Resolution and a past member of the United Nations Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice Departments Roster of Experts in the field of Crimes against the Environment. He has also acted as an Adjudicator on various awards in the construction sector.

Notable publications include “THE LEGAL FRAMEWORK FOR E&D IN TRINIDAD AND TOBAGO” International Oil and Gas Finance Review 2002 and together with a former United States of America Ambassador to Trinidad and Tobago he co-authored “ARBITRATION IN THE UNITED STATES AND THE CARIBBEAN” – The Commonwealth Lawyer, April 2002, Vol. II No.1. He is the co-contributor to “THE AMERICAS RESTRUCTURING AND INSOLVENCY GUIDE 2008/2009” section on Trinidad & Tobago (publishers: Morgan Stanley, PricewaterhouseCoopers, American Bankruptcy Institute, Globe White Page).

In addition to the above diverse areas of practice, he has a basic understanding of Spanish and French and through correspondent attorneys has represented clients in Venezuela, Colombia, Panama and Martinique.

Nicholas Sinanan is the Managing Partner of Johnson, Camacho & Singh and Head of the firm’s Corporate/Commercial practice. Nicholas studied at the University of Wolverhampton, graduating in 1998 with a LL.B (Hons.), and the City University in London, where he received a post graduate Diploma in Professional Legal Skills. He also attended the Inns of Court School of Law in London and was called to the Bar of England and Wales in 2003. In 2004, Nicholas was admitted to practise in Trinidad and Tobago. Prior to his admission, he was a Financial Analyst at a leading local financial institution. He is a member of the Honourable Society of Gray’s Inn in London and of the Law Association of Trinidad and Tobago. Nicholas was a former partner of Lex Caribbean prior to the establishment of JCS.

Sonji Pierre Chase is a practicing attorney with over twenty (20) years invested in number of areas in the legal sphere. She is a holder a Bachelor of Law Degree from the University of London (1998) and Legal Education Certificate from the Hugh Wooding Law School (2000). Additionally, she is the holder of a Masters of Law Degree, majoring in Conveyancing & Contracts and International Trade Law. Post Graduate Diplomas in International Relations (University of the West Indies) and Anti-Trust Law also are part of her list of accreditations.

She has considerable experience in the area of commercial law and tenancy management and was formerly the Legal Advisor to the Trinidad and Tobago Chamber of Industry of Commerce, assisting with the drafting of leases and tenancy agreements for the Chamber. She has also advised on number of private sector organizations on various sector issues as well as on tenancy management.

Her experience extends further into the area of international trade law and anti-trust law (specifically, fair trading/competition law), having worked as a Legal Trade Specialist at the Ministry of Trade & Industry. She has advised on various issues relating to the domestic trade and investment regime; trade negotiations at the international, hemispheric and regional levels and on fair trading practices, in Trinidad and Tobago.

She also has extensive experience in the area of property and mineral title analysis and the preparation of oil mining leases for the petroleum industry, having worked as a Legal Officer in the Exploration and Production Strategic Business Unit of the Petroleum Company of Trinidad and Tobago (Petrotrin).

Sonji joined private practice in April 2006, after serving in legal capacities at Petrotrin, the Trinidad and Tobago Chamber of Industry and Commerce, and the Ministry of Trade and Industry. She specializing mainly in the areas of Conveyancing and Property Development, Intellectual Property and Probate Practice, and is a Senior Partner and the Team Leader/Head of Property, Estates & Conveyancing Department of the Firm Johnson.

In the area of Conveyancing and Property Development, she has prepared and vetted security documentation for different types of consumer lending, for the major lending institutions in Trinidad and Tobago, including Co-operative Societies. She negotiated, prepared and vetted commercial leases and rendered advice on landlord and tenant issues relating thereto.

In the area of Estates, her practice incudes the preparation of wills, applications for grants of representation and advising on estate planning. Since September 2006, she has been an Associate Tutor at the Council of Legal Education/Hugh Wooding Law School, for the Practice and Procedure course.

In the area of Intellectual Property (IP), her practice includes preparation and filing of trademark applications and generally advising on intellectual property rights in Trinidad and Tobago. She also served on a Cabinet-appointed committee for the purposes of reviewing and considering the IP laws of Trinidad and Tobago. She served as a Director of the Trinidad and Tobago Film Company for the period 2006 to 2011, providing legal support towards the development of the film industry in Trinidad and Tobago and Intellectual Property issues relating thereto.

Orrisha Maharajh is a Senior Partner in the Corporate/Commercial practice. Orrisha graduated from the University of London in 1999 with an LL.B(hons) and in 2002 with a Legal Education Certificate from the Hugh Wooding Law School where she was on the Principal’s Roll of Honour. Orrisha was admitted to practise in Trinidad and Tobago in October, 2002 and admitted to the Rolls of Solicitors of England and Wales in 2005. She is a member of the Law Association of Trinidad and Tobago and the Law Society of England and Wales. Orrisha also received a Practice Diploma from the College of Law and the International Bar Association in International Mergers and Acquisitions.

Kevin Nurse Kevin Nurse is a Partner in the firm’s Corporate/Commercial practice. Kevin graduated with LL.B (Hons.) from the University of London in 2000. After a two-year stint at the legal department of the Petroleum Company of Trinidad and Tobago Limited, he completed his legal studies at the City University in London where he received a Post Graduate Diploma in Professional Legal Skills through the Inns of Court School of Law. Kevin was called to the Bar of England and Wales in 2004 and to the Trinidad and Tobago bar in 2006.

Kevin began his practice as an Attorney at M. Hamel-Smith & Co. and was appointed Senior Associate in 2008. He subsequently joined the firm in 2012.

Rowena Bunsee is a Partner in the Firm’s Corporate/Commercial practice. She received an LLB (Hons) from the University of the West Indies in 1998 and was called to the Trinidad and Tobago Bar in 2000. At the start of her career, Rowena spent several years in private practice where she was actively involved in a wide-ranging conveyancing and commercial advisory practice. She has also held positions with a regulator and as in-house counsel in the banking arena and has extensive experience in a variety of areas of law including contracts, property interests, estates, intellectual property, corporate/securities, banking and privacy matters.

Amanda Adimoolah is a Senior Associate in the firm’s Civil/Commercial Litigation practice. Amanda graduated with LL.B (Hons.) from the University of London in 2005 and obtained a Postgraduate Diploma in Legal Education (Commendation) from the University of Wolverhampton in 2006. She went on to obtain a Master of Laws (LL.M) in Corporate and Commercial Law from the University of the West Indies in 2012. Amanda was called to the Bar in Trinidad and Tobago in 2007.
Prior to joining the firm, Amanda was a State Counsel at the Ministry of Finance, Inland Revenue Division for eleven years, where she acted as both Advocate and Instructing Attorney to external Senior Counsel in mostly Corporate and Petroleum Taxation matters. She has participated in several workshops hosted by the United Nations (UN), the IBFD International Tax Academy and the Inter-American Centre of Tax Administrations (CIAT) on Transfer Pricing, International Taxation and the implementation of BEPS and MLI’s in relation to changes in the existing tax treaties in Trinidad and Tobago.

Kendell S. Alexander is an Attorney-at-Law with twelve (12) years’ experience as a Litigator/Advocate in the Privy Council, Court of Appeal, the High Court, Industrial Court and Magistrates Court of Trinidad & Tobago. He has also acted as Junior Counsel to the Commission for the St. Lucia Commission of Inquiry in 2009, attaining experience in the preparation, management and conduct of a Commission of Inquiry as Junior/Instructing Attorney to the Counsel to the Commission.

Kendell is the holder of a Bachelor of Arts degree in History and Literature (Honors) from the University of the West Indies, St. Augustine Campus. In 2006 he graduated with honors from the University of the West Indies, Cave Hill Campus, with a Bachelor of Laws degree (LL.B). At the Cave Hill Campus while being the President of the Law Society and the Faculty of Law Representative on the Guild of Student, he studies were focused on Corporate Law, Employment Law, Revenue and Human Rights.

In October 2008 he attained the Council of Legal Education’s Certificate in Legal Education (LEC) from the Hugh Wooding Law School. At the Hugh Wooding Law School he was trained in Civil Practice & Procedure, Trial Advocacy, Evidence and Equitable Remedies. He also participated in the law school’s Alternative Dispute Resolution/Mediation Clinic.

Kendell was admitted as an Attorney-at-law to the Bar of Trinidad & Tobago on the 31st October 2008. His general areas of practice are civil litigation with an emphasis on claims for breach of contract, personal injuries, medical negligence, and employer’s liability, together with industrial relations/employment law and tax and public law. He is also trained in Mediation and International Commercial Arbitration and is pursuing certification in International Arbitration and Fellowship in the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators.

Prior to joining the firm Kendell was attached to Marie de Vere Chamber from 2008 to 2011 where he developed his skills as an Attorney-at-Law with the guidance of Reginald Armour S.C., Vanessa Gopaul and Simon de La Bastide. Sean Inniss is an Associate in the Firm’s Conveyancing practice. He obtained a BSc. in Political Science from Lake Superior State University, Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan in 2004 before attending law school at St. Thomas University School of Law, Miami, Florida. He returned to Trinidad and Tobago and obtained his LLB (Hons) from the University of London and his LEC from Hugh Wooding Law School, St. Augustine, Trinidad and was subsequently called to the Bar in Trinidad and Tobago in 2011.

Prior to joining the Firm, Sean began his practice at Lex Caribbean in 2011 and has general experience in commercial litigation, estate planning, wills and probate with a focus on conveyancing and property development primarily with respect to mortgages, releases, upstampings, conveyances and mortgage bills of sale.

Shaliza Wallace began her career as a conveyancing secretary in 2002 and joined the Firm’s Conveyancing Department in 2013. While working at the Firm, Shaliza graduated with a Bachelor of Laws LL.B (Hons.) from the University of London in 2017. She went on to obtain a Post Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice (Commendation) from Staffordshire University, England in 2018. Shaliza was admitted to practice in Trinidad and Tobago in 2019 and is a member of the Law Association of Trinidad & Tobago.

Upon admission, Shaliza assumed the role of Associate, performing duties in all of the Firm’s practice areas. Her portfolio includes preparation of releases and mortgage bills of sale for the Conveyancing Department and work permit applications in the Corporate/Commercial Department. She also conducts legal research in the Firm’s Litigation Department and is involved in drafting of pleadings, preparing of procedural documents, witness statements and opinions.

The Consultants

Cecil Camacho recently retired as the Senior Partner leading the corporate/commercial practice. Cecil was admitted to practice as a Solicitor of the Supreme Court of Judicature of Trinidad and Tobago in 1976. He is also admitted to practice in Barbados. Cecil was a former senior partner of DeNobriga Inniss & Co. and Lex Caribbean prior to the establishment of Johnson, Camacho & Singh. Cecil’s expertise lies in the practice areas of Corporate and Commercial law, including Mergers and Acquisitions, Corporate Finance, Project Finance, Capital Markets, Insolvency and Restructuring.

Some of his signature achievements include:

• The establishment of the Corporate Commercial Department at DeNobriga Inniss & Co. in 1992 and leading its growth into one of the largest such practices in Trinidad and Tobago;
• Spearheading the merger between DeNobriga Inniss & Co. and Lex Caribbean (Barbados) in 2000 and becoming its first Regional Managing Partner and leading its growth into one of the largest law firms in the Caribbean before demitting office in 2007;
• Lead Caribbean Counsel for the buyer in the acquisition of the Courts PLC assets in eleven countries. This involved, amongst other things, managing the legal due diligence in these countries and designing the security structure whereby all the assets of the Courts PLC entities in the eleven countries could be used as security whilst complying with the financial assistance restrictions in each country;
• Lead Counsel for lenders in corporate finance and capital markets transactions in Trinidad, Jamaica, Barbados, Antigua, Suriname, Aruba, Guyana, Belize, Grenada, Martinique, The Bahamas, Cayman Islands, St. Martin, St. Vincent, St. Kitts, Dominican Republic and St. Lucia;
• Local Counsel for lenders and sponsors in project finance deals in Trinidad in the energy sector;
• Lead Counsel for lenders in project finance deals in the US Virgin Islands and Jamaica;
• Local Counsel for British Gas PLC from its inception in Trinidad (1992) including advice on the joint venture with BP et al in Atlantic Energy.

Andrew C. Johnson is a Notary Public and was previously the Senior Partner leading the conveyancing practice. Andrew is currently a Consultant in the firm’s conveyancing practice. He attended St. Mary’s College in 1960 and was articled to Rene Pollanais of Messrs. Pollanais & Blanc from 1969. He was admitted to practice in Trinidad and Tobago in 1974, is a member of the Law Association of Trinidad and Tobago and an Honorary Member of the Trinidad and Tobago Chamber of Industry and Commerce. He is also the chairman of the Corporate Commercial & Conveyancing Sub-Committee of the Law Association of Trinidad & Tobago.

Andrew was a former senior partner with DeNobriga Inniss & Co. and Lex Caribbean prior to the establishment of Johnson, Camacho & Singh. Andrew’s main practice area is Property Development, Corporate and Commercial Lending, Credit Union Lines of Credit and Consumer Financing.
